Just after a ‘family meeting’ had been held on Sunday the 11th of July to address the continuation of an additional 14 day adjusted alert level 4 lockdown, President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation once again on Monday the 12th of July due to the outbreak of violence and the destruction of property!
Before the country was addressed on Sunday evening (by Cyril Ramaphosa), the main issue that was set to be addressed was Covid-19 however, South Africans have had to face many pandemics within one major pandemic. The acts of violence that have occurred after former President Jacob Zuma handed himself in due to the constitutional court finding him guilty for failing to appear before a commission, had led to the president addressing both issues with immediate effect.

Singer and songwriter Amanda Black took to Twitter to express her anger with regards to Ramaphosa’s speech that was made on Sunday where he said; “It is a matter of concern to all South Africans that some of these acts of violence are based on ethnic mobilization”. The ‘Amazulu’ artist believes the violence and the looting has nothing to do with the skin color, language, customs, or tribes that individuals belong to. Amanda Black states that the protests have nothing to do with Zulu people either but rather people who support Jacob Zuma as a whole. She continued giving her opinion by saying she will no longer be watching the ‘family meetings’ and encourages people to vote for change later this year telling South Africans that “we deserve better as a people”.
Tweeps have had ongoing conversations to voice that they feel as though the occurring events are no longer about Jacob Zuma or the so-called “ethnic mobilization” and rather about the economic hardships individuals have faced for years.

Due to the looting and the violent scenes in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, the second national address of the week was held on Monday the 12th of July.
President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation with a “heavy heart” starting off by saying “Over the past few days and nights, there have been acts of public violence of a kind rarely seen in the history of our democracy. Property has been vandalized and destroyed. Shops have been looted. Law-abiding citizens have been threatened and intimidated. Workers are scared that they may not be able to return to work. People have died. At this hour, there are several families in our country that are in mourning.”
Cyril Ramaphosa’s response in order to monitor the situation was an authorization of the deployment of the South African National Defence Force in order to give a helping hand to the South African Police Service that has pleaded for backup.

Many individuals called this out before the president addressed the nation, as this is a reoccurring solution that the President implements. We can all recall the student protests that have occurred due to students demanding more financial support from the government. The response to the marches was police brutality towards students as well as heavily armed soldiers implementing tragic outcomes.
South African Dj Nkanyezi Kubheka called for the SANDF to come into action tweeting, “SANDF is needed in KZN because it is a big mess. Police are asking for backup” many civilians disagree as the deployment of SANDF is said to declare war against its own people. This led to the introduction of the #NoToSoldiers hashtag on Twitter as Activist Floyd Shivambu has said “#NoToSoldiers! If Soldiers enter civilian matters, #RamaphosaMustFall because he’s incompetent and directionless in everything he does”.
