In a township called Kagiso, a township in the West Rand of Johannesburg. “Coming from the hood for me meant having a million reasons to get out, the hood is like a start, you shouldn’t end there,” he said.
#1 Why the name Wesside Six?
Mgosi found the rapper’s name really interesting, and we had to ask. “The Wesside is for the West Rand which I represent, as the Best Rapper In The West, and “Life is a board game and I’m the highest number on the Dice, 6”
#2 What inspired you to become a musician?
Speaking to the rapper, Wesside Six, he told Mgosi that the “freedom and the lifestyle” was what inspired him. “Hip hop is not just about the music, it’s the art. The confidence, the fashion, the freedom to express myself however I wanted, the music was just an element in the art I could express myself best with”, it is ultimately a form of therapy. To also see his friends and family succeed is what keeps him going, being able change lives through music
#3 When did you start producing or recording music?
“In 2011, when my long time friend Dankie Baba Sniper asked me to go to the studio with him after we had been in several ciphers at school and in the hood”. He added that this is the kind of peace he lives for hence he never stopped producing.
#4 Who do you look up to locally and globally, and why?
We do not think this is a frequently asked question, and obviously as an artist you start somewhere and this is what he had to say. “Kanye West and Zola 7, sadly most of the local artists I look up to have passed on, the Likes of PRO, HHP, Hugh Masekela, Ray Phiri and Brenda Fassie. They raised me, I wouldn’t be the artist or person I am if it wasn’t for them”.
#5 Who would your dream collabo be with?
Wesside Six believes and hopes to become an example of “dreams do come true, only if you believe and dedicate yourself.” With that said, the rapper told Mgosi that he wants to make music and perform music across the world.
