inister of Transport Fikile Mbalula on Tuesday confirmed that Metro FM’s Somizi Mhlongo was arrested and is currently out on bail of R1500!
Somizi Mhlongo handed himself over to Sandton Police Station at the weekend after Fikile Mbalula laid a charge for breaching disaster management regulations in line with information dissemination and misinformation.
On Friday MGOSI.co.za reported that Fikile Mbalula was at the Sandton SAPS to open a case against Idols Sa judge and Metro FM radio presenter Somizi Mhlongo for contravention of Government lockdown regulations.
Early on Friday before South Africa’s President, Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the country’s COVID-19 lockdown would be extended until the month-end of April, Somizi appeared in Dineo Ranaka’s live Instagram video saying that the government will announce lockdown extension.
Somizi Mhlongo said that Fikile Mbalula (his friend) gave him the heads up about the extension, just before Dineo abruptly stopped her live broadcast she confirmed with him and asked if it was “Mbaks”?
“my apologies for a bad joke…and to min @fikilembalula,” wrote Somizi.
He said that earlier on he was having a chat at work (Metro FM) with Dineo Ranaka “jokingly” and that he thinks it was a bad “joke” as he was scaring her.
“… Dineo asked who told us and I said Fikile Mbalula told me… she was live on Instagram. Then later when I said to her I was joking I didn’t speak to Fikile, I’m just scaring you…” said Somizi.
Fikile Mbalula, in accepting Somizi’s apology said that he spoke with him and he was not even “aware what his joke could mean” for the Minister if it was true.
According to reports, SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Vish Naidoo said Somizi Mhlongo reported to the station at the weekend.
According to Vish Naidoo, Somizi Mhlongo was charged and released on bail R1,500, pending a court appearance.
