South African actress, entrepreneur, television presenter, and model Ayanda Thabethe has put the University of Fort Hare under social media spotlight following the death of a student who died last week at their premises.
And according to the Daily Dispatch 9 students from UFH have died this year.

On Monday afternoon Ayanda Thabethe asked the University if an investigation has been conducted in relation to the death of the student.
“Has an investigation been done for a student who died last week at your premises,” asked Ayanda Thabethe.
This is after the University of Fort Hare boasted on social media that they have launched a remote and virtual education laboratory (ReVEL) attached to the Physics Department, alluding that it was the first of its kind virtual lab in South Africa.

However, they have responded by saying that an investigation is afoot and that they have been in communication with the family of the student since Sunday.
“An investigation is afoot and is led by the SAPS subsequent to liaison with the University Protection Services. Also, the university through the Dean of Students and Institutional Advancement are in constant communication with the family… since Sunday,” says the University of Fort Hare, based in Alice in the Eastern Cape.

Ayanda Thabethe’s question touched Thandolwethu Maqanda who says he’s a second-year student at the University and that 2019 has been a rough year and they don’t feel protected at all by the university.
“I am a 2nd-year male student at (the) University of Fort Hare and to be honest 2019 has been a rough year and we don’t feel protected at all, I was gay-bashed last year by 7 homophobic male students, I managed to run away… I was scared to report the case of my sexuality,” says Thandolwethu.

In comforting Thandolwethu, Ayanda says that she hopes that he has healed physically and that she hopes he tries and gets help for his emotional healing after going through something so tragic.
“Oh no, this breaks my heart… Please find a group of people you trust who will stand with you such issues need to be reported,” says Ayanda Thabethe.

Mpho, who is the owner of the Mpho Funding Program also responded to Ayanda Thabethe’s question by saying that at the end of August her friend was stabbed to death by another student in front of his residence.
“But I am telling you now the ni**a is still out there living life. Mind you there are security cameras but no footage was released or something. A lot of things happened this year at this campus,” says Mpho.
