Lebogang Khumalo is a South African DJ and to his people, he goes by the name, KayLash. The renowned DJ hails from Mohlakeng of which he was born and raised. What we know as the West of Johannesburg.
“I decided to move in with my mum and little brother at Kagiso (Westrand) [2012] because I loved the vibe I was getting this site.
KayLash began his music career when he was still a junior. Back when he attended events with his father who introduced the music scene, especially because he aspired to do what his father was doing.
Attained from both his name and surname, ‘KayLash’ created a name that would best suit his brand.
“Kay for Khumalo then Lash for Lebogang.” That is quite creative we must say.
The musician added that he knows quite a number of people who like going by the name, ‘Lesh’ and not ‘Lash’. He just wanted to be different, and that is what makes him different. Periodt!
#1 What is it that inspired you to be in the music scene?
“I was inspired by my dad to become a DJ and a producer. Well my parents separated when I was still in grade 2 so I had to stay with my dad at Mohlakeng. So sometimes he had no choice but to go to his gigs with me, plus he was a wedding’s, birthday party and chillas typer DJ so I used to see when people get touched and enjoy his sets, and that inspired me to become a DJ. To make me also come with my own sound,” said KayLash.
#2 What type of sound(s) do you produce?
“I produce Amapiano, house and hip hop too but am an Amapiano DJ,” said the composer.
He continued, “I started producing around 2012 so I started producing house music and deep house first, then fell in love with hip hop then Amapiano movement came. Then I became a soulmate with the sound of Amapiano now I can’t live without listening to it everyday.”
#3 What plans do you have going forward?
With already helping a lot of youth to be creative and be themselves. The artist told Mgosi that he loves grooming young people in his space. In the best possible way he knows how to.
“I am just waiting for that moment where I have to leave my 9-5 job and focus on my music career and gig every weekend and spread my music,” said the DJ.
Now, he is also busy with his Ep that he plans on releasing around October. We can not wait!
