Due to Amapiano’s popularity in South Africa, DJ and Producer Shimza has indicated that mainstream venues hardly play Afro/house, saying that it has become “exclusive” and that’s not good for the culture, locally!
“Mainstream venues hardly play Afro-house, it has become “exclusive” and that’s not good for the culture, we end up having to create and play Amapiano bootlegs and vocals so we can make sense. Only a few artists and DJs who don’t do Amapiano are working in SA,” wrote Shimza.

Shimza’s concerns did not go unnoticed.
“Amapiano is taking over, making all the other sounds redundant. Amapiano is a South African construct, those European House tech things don’t have space anymore. Cross over,” responded @karabo_tjale.
“Afro-house is international buddy we need to influence them more, piano will expire anytime from now on,” wrote @Xeshamusiq.
“You guys are to blame through gatekeeping the genre to yourselves in order to be exclusive, now that amapiano is fully commercialized, you cry foul, the genre (afro) no longer resonates with South Africans, maybe in Europe because the assumption is, we walk around with drums,” wrote @Sihle_NJM.

“Maybe the Afro House industry might have played a role in this. Major players (Black Coffee, Da Capo, yourself, etc.) influenced a change towards AfroTech. Lots of hot local guys followed, but this didn’t resonate with the masses, leaving more space for other genres to take up space,” said @Binos_LM.
Responding to @Binos_LM, publisher and author @Mduduzzee_Dube said: “The truth is, they stopped doing authentic Afro-house/sounds, & we’re drowned by the European interpretation – hence the audience is no longer feeling their sound! When you criticize amajita at their “peak”, they say you’re “hating”! Kanti you’re soberly trying to steer them!”
@Makhosazane_SA said that Afro/house won’t go out of fashion anytime soon as long as the producers/DJs stay consistent even through the Amapiano phase.

“We don’t know how soon people will be tired of them, for example, look at gqom we all thought it was gonna last, the trick is to remain on top of the game always. Gqom was so nice and we never thought it was a phase… we shall see. I have nothing against Amapiano I love them,” added @Makhosazane_SA.
