Joe, real name Majota Mandlakayise Isaac Khambule’s exit allegedly comes after he demanded a 20% increase from the broadcaster!adio 2000’s breakfast show host Phat
On Tuesday Radio 2000 officially announced the departure of Phat Joe as the breakfast show host.
Phat Joe joined the breakfast show ‘Phat Joe and the family’ in April 2019.
“The station would like to wish Phat Joe well on his future endeavors and thanks him for his contribution to the station. Radio 2000 will in due course announce the changes to its line-up and will keep its listeners abreast of any further developments,” said SABC Group Communications Acting Spokesperson Mmoni Seapolelo.
Amid April radio line-up changes, Sunday World reports that Phat Joe resigned because the SABC refused to accede to his demand for a pay increase, and reduced working schedules during their new contract negotiations.
The paper claims that it was only after the SABC rejected Phat Joe’s demands that he tendered his resignation.
Phat Joe is not new to controversy, he was also pulled off air “until further notice” following his “homophobic” comments about the gay community.
Joe added his opinion on a debate over homophobic comments that were then made by reality TV star and nudist Zodwa Wabantu.
Zodwa Wabantu said that gays are silly because they are fighting with women.
“Name one gay who has never fought with a woman in the industry. Their problem is that they [gays] are convinced that they have a vagina, while they have a penis. We [women] have a vagina,” said Wabantu on her TV show.
The publication further reports that “Senior Officials” privy to Phat Joe’s contract negotiations said the radio presenter was demanding to work from Tuesday until Thursday to accommodate his other commitments outside the broadcaster.
According to the paper, an executive at the SABC said Phat Joe was also demanding a 20% increase on his current rate in his new contract, despite making demands for reduced working schedule.
Apparently, the same official who spoke with the paper revealed that Radio 2000’s management have already approached Bongani Mtolo of East Coast Radio as Phat’s replacement.
It is further reported that Kenny Maistry of Radio 702 has also been earmarked as a potential replacement on the breakfast show.
The publications’ source also claimed that whoever agrees with the terms with the SABC will replace Phat Joe.
SABC spokeswoman Mmoni Seapolelo confirmed Phat Joe’s resignation but did not respond to claims that he wanted more money.
However, they also report that his publicity manager Sadiqqah Miller said “The information you received concerning Mr. Khambule’s resignation is untrue,” she said he left 2-years before his contract expired to focus on growing family and business ventures.
He’s apparently in “good standing” with the SABC.
