Musician Esona “Sona” Maphumulo, who is DJ Black Coffee’s son has reportedly been listed as the director of Soulistic Agency and the Black Coffee Foundation.
Which might make him one of South Africa’s wealthiest young managers. Well … after being handed two directorships at his father’s companies, he certainly must be.

City Press has reported that award-winning Nkosinathi Maphumulo aka DJ Black Coffee has quit two of his major businesses.
Out of the eighteen businesses he founded and has made his son Esona “Sona” Maphumulo a director.
It is also believed that DJ Black Coffee resigned as a director of the Black Coffee Foundation and handed over the directorship to his son. Who has now joined his sister, Nomalungelo and mother Sindiswa Dandala as directors.
ESONA MAPHUMULO LISTED AS DIRECTOR
The 23-year-old has allegedly been listed as the director of the Soulistic Agency and the Black Coffee Foundation, according to the publication.
Soulistic Agency represents the DJ who reportedly brings in millions of rands annually from his international bookings.
Esona is reportedly signed under the agency that also represents former Scandal! actress turned musician Nomvelo Makhanya.
DJ Black Coffee’s sister Nomalungelo declined to comment and referred all questions to her brother.
“In a statement shared by Nomalungelo earlier, the foundation said it had been involved in collaborations with gym company Virgin Active SA to raise funds for disadvantaged people and the Mthatha Food Bank in the Eastern Cape.”
“According to company registration details, Tyolo’s involvement in the business was recorded in 2020, a month before he turned 21. This after his father resigned from Soulistic Agency and handed over the reins to the budding musician, making him the sole director.”
Esona was not immediately available for comment while Soulistic Agency publicist Neo Chabedi asked that questions be emailed to her, but had not yet responded by the time of going to print.
The internationally acclaimed DJ in September announced that he would be shutting down his record label, Soulistic Music, after 17 years in business.
Soulistic Music publicist Chabedi revealed in a statement:
“We are no longer a record label. We have since released all the artists under the label. Only Black Coffee is [left] under the label. The entity still exists with the founder left as the only artist. He did this as he believes artists should own their music and rights fully.”
DJ Black Coffee’s son Esona made headlines in June when he was credited as the producer and co-writer of international star Drake’s hit song Texts Go Green.
“Before it became Texts Go Green, Drake had sent a vocal, which was quite uptempo. I made a beat for it and I struggled,” Maphumulo told the guests, adding that it was Tyolo who came to the rescue.”
Black Coffee shared that his son, who had always shown an interest in music. Rescued him with a beat that was featured on the album.
