On Sunday evening, Canadian rapper Drake took to Instagram to shine a light on people he regards heroic figures in his life. The Instagram post contained nine images of people in his team that he has worked with on his recent mixtape titled “Honestly, Nevermind”.
One of these posts was of South African DJ, producer, and songwriter DJ Black Coffee. The pair first collaborated on Drake’s Commercial mixtape “More Life” in 2017.
This is where we first got to witness Drake pay his respects and show admiration. For the DJ’s craft as they lightly remade Black Coffee’s 2009 hit “Superman” which was then titled “Get It Together”.
This sparked an ongoing 5 year bromance where the rapper would come out to support the DJ on his international shows in Toronto. Often posting Black Coffee behind the decks.
Earlier this month, we got to experience yet another beautiful collaborative effort from the pair. This is on Drake’s seventh studio LP titled “Honestly, Nevermind” on which DJ Black Coffee is an executive producer alongside Noah “40” Shebib and more of Drake’s long time collaborators and close friends.
Black Coffee redefines the norm. From bypassing Afro-House cliché’s to effortlessly and might we add, impressively DJing with just one hand. His sound is distinct and quite like no other, perhaps due to his extensive knowledge and education in music.
This may be why the DJ has managed to step into and own the Classic House and Alternative/Electronic music scene, gaining major recognition from international artists all over the world wanting to collaborate with him.
Much like the drama that the DJ has faced over the years. Drake has also seen his fair share of turmoil and more recently backlash over his new sound.
It would appear that the rapper is exploring the more alternative and electronic side of music. Of course who better to consult than the electronic “Black King” himself.
Honestly, never mind what the haters say. When an influential figure like Drake shouts you out, the industry sits up and pays attention.
