We can all agree on one thing, it has been one bumpy road for both Somizi Mhlongo and ex husband Mohale Motaung following their messy divorce. We all witnessed how messy the split was, from words like ‘fisting’ being thrown around, social media trolling and sides being taken, to finally the Johannesburg High Court making a decision that shocked us all.
Reality TV star, Somizi Mhlongo has confirmed that his ‘divorce’ from estranged husband Mohale Motaung has been finalised after he withdrew legal action against Motaung.
Mhlongo confirmed the news in a detailed statement on social media. He said the decision to withdraw the divorce action came after they “were unable to reach an agreement regarding the existence of the marriage”.
He said withdrawing the legal action would “avoid protracted, costly and acrimonious litigation proceedings”.
Rumours of the then ”It Couple” heading for divorce began spreading like wildfire back in 2021 when a leaked audio of Motaung making allegations of abuse against Mhlongo went viral. Mhlongo denied the claims and said their divorce would be finalised “fairly and responsibly”.
In the statement, Mhlongo said they initially agreed to enter into settlement negotiations to end their marriage amicably.
“Although I received legal advice suggesting that Mohale’s disavowal of our marriage may have warranted an exception to the usual rule of the withdrawing party paying legal costs, I opted to offer to cover the costs,” he continued. “This decision was influenced by the fact that the case was still in its early stages and the legal costs were relatively small, which made pursuing the matter seem unproductive.”
“There is no court order to this effect. The matter was never heard by a court, and no court has considered the merits of the dispute and made a ruling on those disputes.”
“I am grateful that the matter has been resolved and that I can focus on the future,” Mhlongo continued. “I hope that we can find a path towards healing and resolution. I respectfully ask that our privacy, during this time of transition, be respected.”
