Wandi Nzimande’s death was confirmed on Wednesday by Gauteng base radio station Kaya FM, where he was one of the resident DJs.
“It is with great difficulty that we share the news of Mzwandile Nzimande’s passing earlier today, as confirmed by his family. DJ 1D, as he was affectionately known, was the pioneering co-founder of the iconic streetwear brand – Loxion Kulca, a storyteller and a highly accomplished figure in the South African music scene. His passion for telling South African stories was evident in one of his recent projects —SABC 1’s Evolution of Mzansi Street Culture. He spent a decade behind the decks as Kaya FM’s resident DJ, where many were blessed to experience his friendship and endlessly imaginative musical talent,” read a statement released by Kaya FM.

Condolences from industry friends:
“The most real and hardest working person I knew. Co-founder of Loxion Kulca took Soweto TV to heights unseen before, music man, a f*cking creator who loved to CREATE! He always had time for me, scolded me for sleeping on myself all the damn time.! #RIPDJ1D,” wrote Bridget Masinga.
“End of last year @Dj1D (Wandi Nzimande) called me to record for @MStreetculture. I joked: in a pandemic? He said: Mel, it’s for the culture! You have to do it. And I’m so glad I did. He was all about street culture, our music, our stories, us. What a wonderful man & legacy” wrote Metro FM’s news anchor, Mel Bala.
“Today, if you go to 255 Rivonia Rd u’ll find Morningside shopping centre. Back then it used to be my house address. @DJ1D (Wandi Nzimande) and many others would chill there almost everyday spinning vinyl. I will never forget how we hogged my PC all day designing the #LoxionKulcha logo #RIPDJ1D,” wrote Fistaz Mixwell.
“Thank you for the laughs, the tears & memories you shared with us over the last four hours. #RIPDJ1D” wrote Sizwe Dhlomo.
