Burna Boy is coming to South Africa despite his tweets on xenophobia two months ago where he stated that he never set foot back in South Africa. In recent developments, Burna Boy will now headline the Africans Unite Concert right here in Mzansi, writes Buchule Raba.
Hip hop Supa Mega, AKA has since then clarified the public misrepresentation of his football tweet, as a xenophobic attack. He was also saddened by the notion that he “dislikes or hates” Nigeria/Nigerians and he stated he does NOT.
“I’m hurt, man. This match was bigger than football. The biggest rivalry on the continent. Why do we always have to lose against Naija at everything,” says AKA in one of the tweets that were misunderstood for xenophobia.
Nigerian superstar Burna Boy took it to an extreme level by insulting and threatening AKA’s life, “And AKA I knew you was retarded but I didn’t know it had gotten this bad. Next time I see you, you better have a big security bro, on Gambos grave you’re gonna need it.”
The Nigerian artist also stated on the platform that he has not set foot in South Africa since 2017 and that he will not ever come to South Africa again for any reason.
“I have not set foot in SA since 2017. And I will not ever go to South Africa again for any reason until the South African government wakes the f**k up and really performs a miracle because I don’t know how they can ever possibly fix this,” he tweeted.
First of all, Burna Boy has disrespected our government publicly and made them seem as if they are not capable of resolving local problems. He also indirectly excused Nigerians from the xenophobic attacks and stamped that as local citizens’ responsibility. Now, he’s coming here? After he threatened to harm one of our local artists? After he insulted our government?
His public outbursts did fuel more anger between Africans as Nigerians were also up in arms fuming without any full comprehension or whatsoever of what AKA said on Twitter. Why? Because of someone like Burna Boy who holds a very influential public status as an artist. Because of Burna Boy who didn’t take time to fully understand what AKA was actually saying? Burna Boy doesn’t only owe South Africans, AKA an apology but the whole African, including its diaspora.
Following the recent xenophobic attacks and increasing reports of gender-based violence in South Africa, Burna Boy, Kwesta and other African acts will headline a concert in November to unify all Africans and speak out against femicide.
Presented by South Africa’s Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, in association with Channel O, Monster Energy and powered by Play Network Africa. Africans Unite Concert is a collaborative project that aims to rebuild trust and respect amongst African nations by hanging the current narrative to that of unity and solidarity.
I do understand Minister Nathi Mthethwa trying to unite Africans using this great initiative. At the same time, I feel like he lacks some reality.
Dear Minister, how do you allow an artist who threatened to harm one of your own to come perform here without issuing an apology? Someone who insulted the very same government that you’re serving? Minister, you’re serving South Africans and your priority should be who you’re serving and not the other way around. Minister Mthethwa, Burna Boy must apologise to our government, South Africans, including the very same artist that he told, must have big security around him, AKA.
If indeed, the concert is Africans Unite, well, AKA, after Burna Boy has issued an apology should perform alongside him. I see this as unity as we can see that since xenophobia these two artists are not united at all. AKA and fellow South Africans haven’t forgotten and if Burna Boy thought by removing the tweets we will say it’s water under the bridge, well, he didn’t know that we are a nation that dislikes being disrespected.
AKA, said that he wouldn’t mind burying the hatchet between himself and Burna Boy. What is your Burna Boy saying minister Mthethwa?
“I wouldn’t mind at all… He must just apologize so we can forgive him,” says AKA.
Now, minister, should we conclude and say these people that are seeing AKA as an Albino are well when it comes to senses? Knowing how we fight killings of people with albinism in South Africa. How do people (posing as Nigerians) see albinism as a way to insult someone? How do the same people see albinism as a joke and not treated like other fellow human beings?
Africans Unite Concert is in November and minster Nathi Mthethwa the above is something to ponder about.
The concert will take place in Cape Town at The Lawns on November 23rd (Tickets are available on Webtickets [HERE] and Pick n Pay stores) and Tshwane’s Sun Arena on November 24 (Tickets will be available at Computicket on Thursday).
