South African rapper Ntokozo Zakwe says local hip hop hasn’t had a new star since Emtee and Nasty C. This is because artists don’t want to learn in order to master their craft in the business.
Zakwe says artists always want to be the ones performing and they do not take the time to support other artists.
“I’m so sorry that there is no open-mic at the Zakwe Home Coming Picnic… Not every show is about unearthing new talent, although we have a competition that one can enter and stand a chance to perform,” says Zakwe.

In terms of supporting other acts, Zakwe says that he has been in many shows as the Zakwe he is today.
“Where I just go there to watch and enjoy the show. From Pop Bottles, club gigs, Fact Durban Rocks, Good Sundae, Last Dance… also did that before I became Zakwe… I don’t always have to perform, also, you don’t have to ask for performance and if that doesn’t happen so and so is not happy.
“Nowadays, a hip hop show consists of 80% Emcees, and they won’t show you, love, because they also want to be on that stage,” wrote Zakwe.

Zakwe says that he knows hunger for success is real, but when do you watch, learn, go home and rehearse? Alluding to his assumption, “maybe it’s one of the reasons hip hop hasn’t had a new star since Emtee and Nasty C.”
Zakwe says that the effort that is put around making a show happen is draining, the monies lost, the headache and other related things.
“It’s not easy guys, sometimes just go and show love and support. Learn and study why that person is rocking the stage that much, trust me it will work on your favor,” says Zakwe.

“You can also pull through at the Gagasi FM studios this Saturday and stand a chance to perform live on THE FRESH CUT,” says Zakwe.
