Mikhale Megan Jones best known as Mikhale Jones is a Johannesburg-born and raised creative who grew up on a farm.
She is a force to be reckoned with. As an AFDA graduate, Mikhale has worked at perfecting her artistry, which marked the start of what would become the new normal for artists and audiences alike. She went on to sign an international record deal with Afroforce, a division under the Universal Music Group.
“Because I grew up so secluded from the world I had a lot of time to explore myself and my talents,” said Mikhale Jones.
Since signing to Universal Music, Mikhale has released five singles off her highly anticipated album, It Is What It Is. Inspired by the shackles of a failed past relationship, she bares the inner workings of her heart and mind through music.
As a soul / urban, pop & R&B musician, Mikhale Jones has fuzed the 70/80 music influences to her sound and uses her dancing ability to tell a more captivating story. She knew from a young age that she was destined to be a performer.
Now, at 25 years old, she has been more than noticed by the industry and public alike. With a ‘say-it-as-I-mean it’ attitude, her lyrics are honest, raw and engaging. With definite jazz influences coming through, her soulful voice takes the listener on an organic journey.
#1 Where does your inspiration to become a musician come from and when did you start?
Mikhale told Mgosi: “It started on the farm ! I absolutely enjoyed entertaining people from a very young age ! Family gathering were the best time for me because I finally had a crowd to show off what I’ve been practicing.”
The artist grew up singing with her grandmother on every road trip. Every time she got into the car with her grandmother she had to put Whitney Houston on. That is where the love for music stems from.
#2 When did you start producing or recording music?
The musician started recording at the age of 17. Mikhale says she was terrible when she started. “Didn’t realise how precise you have to be as a recording artists until I learned the skill.”
#3 What are your hopes and dreams as an evolving artist?
“I just want to give R&B a voice [and/or] platform in South Africa,” the singer said.
#4 Who do you look up to locally and globally? Why them?
“Locally – Nasty C – he’s dedication, work ethic and professionalism inspires me everyday ! I learn so much from just his movement and how he speaks,” she exclaimed.
“Globally – Rihanna – that woman has sacrificed years of her life to to a record label that helped her build a brand so strong !! And now with that brand she can earn for life !! Insane concept.”
#5 Why do you go by the name Mikhale Jones?
“It rolls off the tongue so beautifully, if you know how to pronounce it lol MIKHALE JONES,” she told the publication.
Currently working on her third project. Mikhale Jones is patiently awaiting for her label to start dropping project number 2.
In the meantime, Mikhale Jones continues to grind and enjoy sounds like KU LO SA by Oxlade. “Afro beat is my happy sound.”
