Mohadingwane Josina Setshedi better known as Hights, is a 25-year-old South African singer. Who was born in the Alexandra township, but spent her childhood in a small village. In between Limpopo and Northwest called Ngobi.
She later moved to Alexandra after the passing of her grandfather. Who was her guardian since her mother passed on when she was just 3-years-old.
#1 When did your music journey start?
Hights’ music journey began at a tender age back in primary at Ngobi when she joined the school choir in Grade 3. This was at the age of 8. It is true about what they say about investing in your children’s development from the earliest age. They will turn out like the likes of Hights!
#2 When did you start producing or recording music?
She took music seriously in 2016 when an aspiring rapper from Alex asked her to sing a chorus in his song. Since then she started recording her own music and birthed her first EP titled “Hear Me” which got her performance on some of the country’s biggest stages with some of the country’s biggest stars.
#3 How would you describe your music?
Speaking to Mgosi, Hights told us that “at times you’ll find my songs groovy, fast, energetic and some slow but one thing in common about all of my music is that it encourages and builds.” Her lyrics are what you listen to before going to that interview. While stressed about your exam results, while pursuing your passion and even at groove.
#4 Who do you look up to locally and globally?
“I admire Beyonce´s hardwork, consistency and versatility.” Locally…(she chuckled)”it’ll have to be myself bathong, the world is yet to find out,” she said.
#5 How far are you with your music journey?
Setshedi has since received airplay for her house song titled “Shine” which has been number 1 for months on Slootfm ‘stop10 hosted by Lungstar. “My trap song titled “H!ghts” was No1 on Alexfm’s top5 hip-hop show hosted by Jovislash and other radio stations such as flatlineradio, yfm, jozifm and many more.”
Her other song titled “Rara” also charted number 1 on Namibia’s biggest radio station Nam Radio. Rara accompanied by Hights’ other songs are now frequently used on South Africa’s most loved soapie Skeem Saam as background music.
Hights has since worked with Murumba Pitch, DJ Lenzo, MalumzOnDecks, RethabileKhumalo, Manuworld Staretc and has an unreleased song with OpenMicProduction’s DJ Obza. She has an upcoming 4 track EP that’s dropping on the 11th of July 2022 titled SAMAHABA.
