Award-winning musician Khuli Chana is the latest celebrity to be investigated by the South African Revenue Service (SARS).
According to Sunday World, Khuli Chana owes more than R1.1 million in taxes to the government. He has been at the top of trends in light of the news.
South Africans have been attempting to connect the dots about his alleged wealth despite his tax troubles. According to reports, SARS has since asked the courts to rule against Khuli Chana.
According to court documents, the musician owes SARS more than R426 000 in value-added tax through his business Khuli Chana Holdings.
However, it has since risen to more than R615 000.
The sum increased after R30 000 in fines and nearly R160 000 in interest were added to the amount he owed.
In addition, Khuli Chana owes SARS about R30 000 in outstanding pay as you earn. After SARS added another R11 000 penalty and R135 000 in interest, the sum grew to nearly R445 000.
Khuli Chana Holdings also SARS at least R19 000 in unemployed insurance fund and more than R6000 incurred in interest, and over R1 000 in penalties.
However, Khuli has yet to respond to the outrageous rumours that have catapulted him into the news spotlight. He certainly isn’t the first public figure to make headlines for the wrong reasons.
