Sammie says her rap game derives from poetry. Speaking to Drum Magazine, the rapper revealed that she has always been creative as she has dabbled in painting and fashion design. When it comes to her pen game, she said started writing poetry in grade 9.
“I’ve always been creative, but it took me a while to believe that what I was creating was good enough to share. The poetry gave birth to Sam the rapper. After sharing my poetry on TikTok and seeing people’s reaction that’s when I thought I might have something.”
The KZN-born musician, who recently graduated as a psychologist. Admitted that she was scared of the reactions and reviews after releasing her E.P. This is because you will never know how the audience will receive you. Also adding that she wrote all the tracks on her debut project.
“I wrote all the songs earlier in the year and I was scared to put it out. I will be dropping new songs and I am excited for everyone to hear them.
“I am transitioning as a person. I often go through phases where I am obsessed with a medium of art and I pursue it with all that is in me. I went from making clothes to painting, and I started writing songs in private and now I make music for people,” Sammie explained.
Heavens also mentions that her boyfriend, Nasty C inspired her passion for music. With her boyfriend, already a hugely successful rapper. Sammie says that she was afraid to tell him she was ready to join the hip hop music scene.
“I was scared to tell him that I wanted to rap, I was scared he would think I’m not taking it seriously. I didn’t want him to think I am mocking the arts or that I’m just doing it because I saw him become successful off it.
“He inspired the passion and he pushed me to be unapologetic about me pursuing music. He made me fearless, after I told him I wasn’t scared of anything,” Sammie added.
