Mpho Modikoane, yes Mpho, we called you by your government name. Otherwise known as Mpho Popps is a well-known and respected South African comedian, Tv personality, film star, and presenter. The man wears many “hats” and this time he’ll be pairing them with an apron labelled “Roast Master”.
Popps started his career back in 2009 on SABC 1’s “So you Think You’re Funny” competition where he made his marked and first gained notoriety. He then went on to perform on stages like Laugh Out Loud, Blacks Only, Mzansi Magic’s Opening Guys, and the late Night with Kgomotso.
The comedian also took on the role of Kumba in the miniseries Taxi Ride, giving a stellar performance as he embodied the flamboyant, yet roguish character.
The comedian made his first Comedy Central appearance in 2012 on the very first episode of Comedy Central Presents which was a live show. He returned to the Comedy Central stage in 2021 to open at the pre-roast of Somizi where he had the audience in joyful tears.
Speaking on the much-anticipated Roast Khanyi Mbau, the comedian told News24 that this was a career milestone he could not have imagined happening, and that he regarded Mbau as “a legend and an entertainment icon”.
Mpho Popps and Khanyi Mbau took to their socials to announce that the comedian would be the roast master with a hilarious video of the two sharing a bathtub. In the video, Popps can be observed sitting knees-in-hand, in the victim position as Mbau barked orders about how the roast is her show and what she expects.
The media mogul even brushes her foot over his face to show dominance and disrespect, it was all lighthearted and yet another way to show that she was ready to give as much as she’ll have to take.
Mpho Popps said that he was looking forward to “throwing Khanyi onto the flames” adding “may the thickest skin win”, a slight jab at the skin jokes that Miss Mbau said she would be expecting at her roast.
If Mpho’s sets are anything to go by, then Mzansi should be in for a real treat! The show airs in August, read our previous article about the Roast Of Khanyi Mbau here to find out more.
