Let’s agree on one thing: When it comes to Zandile Msutwana and Thembisa Mdoda’s execution of Vuyiswa Jola on The Queen, we honestly cannot compare the old Vuyiswa and the current one. It’s simple, a spoon and a teaspoon do not carry the same load of food and or sugar, writes Buchule Raba!

Without any lies detected, Thembisa Mdoda gave us an amazing show when it comes to Our Perfect Wedding – her presenting skills are lit and her acting skills need to be honed, to say the least.
When I observe Zandile Msutwana’s craft, I see an individual that deeply invests in the emotional being of any character that she has to execute. She’s a well-accomplished actress, dating back from her days as Akua Yenana on the SABC1 drama series Society, from 2007 – 2010, Home Affairs S2 as a grieving woman, Nomazwe on Isikizi, including Lindiwe Cele on Zabalaza back in 2013 (acted along with her – Thabang Maake, Journalist). She’s a legendary actress and it’s unfair for Thembisa Mdoda to be even compared to such legendary talent.

I watched The Queen, and it felt so annoying to see Thembisa Mdoda trying to pull emotions that were non-existent. She’s really suitable for a happy character and not an emotional wreck. Her execution of Vuyiswa Jola is really not up to par. She can’t execute that character, including what it should bring to the entire story.
When I say Thembisa Mdoda is Our Perfect Wedding, I mean that’s what she’s good at – being a great and well-articulated presenter. She’s a former radio DJ, “actress”, singer, writer, and she was also the host of the Highveld After Dark on 94.7. Prior to that, she was a newsreader for Wits Radio.
The least fitting role for Thembisa Mdoda was when she landed her first major recurring role in the Mzansi Magic telenovela, The Road, playing the role of Thabisile Cebekhulu, the make-up artist, and resident gossip at Bambhata Productions. Personally, she’s a light-hearted actress that can well execute light-hearted roles. Vuyisaw Jola is a massive role that needs to be backed up with a lot of time invested in character development, getting to know the character, research similar roles, technics of carrying the character well, and not give us Our Perfect Wedding.

I don’t entirely blame Thembisa Mdoda, but the Fergusons for making her a joke during this pandemic. Zandile Msuthwana left huge shoes to fill, and Thembisa’s acting cannot fill that up.
She needs to try to make herself believe that she’s the character. Try to build up fears, her feelings and immerse herself in the story. She needs to be obsessive when it comes to her character.
I honestly can’t think of any role that The Queen can cast Thembisa Mdoda for.

Zandile Msutwana completed a Performers Diploma in Speech and Drama at the University of Cape Town. Whilst at university her roles in productions included Regan in King Lear, Matilda in The Suit, Aida in On The Brink, and Chorus in Trojan Women.
It’s just impudent to compare a well-accomplished Zandile Msutwana with an amateur actress but a good presenter.
