Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, also known as DJ Maphorisa, refused the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) suggestion to participate in a diversion programme before the NPA drops the assault charge Thuli Phongolo brought against him.
In order to show his innocence to the public, the producer has requested that the NPA instead go ahead with the trial and charge him.
DJ Maphorisa, the king of Amapiano, has also reportedly fired his legal team after it agreed to the idea of the diversion programme, which includes anger management among other things.
According to SundayWorld, a source who is connected to both Maphorisa and Phongolo disclosed this information.
After Phongolo said that Maphorisa assaulted her, he was taken into custody in May and was charged with assault.
When Thuli explained her ordeal to the authorities, saying that she got into a fight with Phori after confronting him about a dispute that occurred the previous night.
Maphorisa allegedly reacted angrily to Thuli and began to smack her on her face. Phongolo claimed that Maphorisa held her, dragged her to the balcony, and violently grabbed her by her neck.
Phongolo later retracted the charges against Maphorisa. In a joint statement, Phongolo and Maphorisa asked the public to grant them the time and space to resume their work without interruptions.
