ocial Media users around the world are guns blazing after a Bulgarian singer Mihaela Marinova masked herself with a black face to look like South Africa’s songbird Nomcebo Zikode for a TV performance of the hit song Jerusalema!
And their goal is to become a celebrity in terms of personality and visuals!
Mihaela Marinova went on a serious transformation ahead of her appearance on Bulgarian TV’s music competition Kato 2 kapki Voda, which gives singers the chance to recreate popular hits from around the world – not recreate black faces.
“През изминалата година песента Jerusalema обиколи 🌍, а тази вечер прекрасната Михаела ще се превърне в африканската певица Nomcebo, която изпълнява песента в дует с Master KG,” said the show’s Intagram page.
Translation: “Last year, the song Jerusalema toured 🌍, and tonight the beautiful Michaela will become the African singer Nomcebo, who performs the song in a duet with Master KG.”
Mihaela Marinova later hit the stage with the song Jerusalema to so much cheering, but her Nomcebo Zikode look alike got folks fuming.
“This Nomcebo thing is not a joke. It’s disgusting,” said singer and Pastor Khaya Mthethwa.
“I don’t understand why they couldn’t just sing this song without the blackface. This is actually exhausting!” wrote Zama Khumalo.
About Kato 2 Kapki Voda TV Show:
Last year, according to reports the same show received harsh criticism after a contestant impersonated BTS’s Jimin while two hosts made disrespectful and inappropriate comments. This Bulgarian show challenges celebrities to transform into another celebrity from around the world in three months. Their goal is to become a celebrity in terms of personality and visuals.
This was reportedly not the first time the show has made racist and xenophobic comments on their show. They were previously seen mocking Psy and talking about North Korea.
“This is just so disrespectful to black people and especially to Nomcebo. I sincerely hope she sues everyone involved and she gets paid,” said Wonder Mahlobo.
