The debate was sparked by a certain Twitter user who asked Magnus his thoughts on a tweet by group CEO of Sygnia, Magda Wierzycka when she posted: “As unpopular as these maybe (I expect howling of outrage) my proposal for the budget are 2% hike in VAT, 4% once-off tax on all retirement fund savings, 5% once-off tax on income. Sorry, we have ran out of options and out of ideas.”
“I am really interested in your thoughts on this? What do you think will the fallout be and what options can you put forward as a counter-argument to this?” asked the user.
“We are so big in trouble, this might be one way to raise the cash. The other choice is a Moody’s downgrade,” responded Magnus Heystek.
Another user responded by saying that “Those rich like (Magnus and Magda) people think everyone is rich like them. They always want to bleed other people so they can protect their own interests. ”
Magnus Heystek wrote that his first job was mowing lawns for other people in Orange Grove.
“My first job was mowing lawns for other people in Orange Grove. Then shop assistant in Louis Botha then worked while studying at RAU. MY first formal job was at the Jhb abattoir. Don’t come with this white privilege thing with me. I seem to have missed that bus…” he wrote.
Of which Andile Ncube chipped in and wrote that “You clearly don’t know or understand what white privilege is but that’s ok because those on the table never understand why everyone else is hungry.”
In responding to Magnus, another user wrote: “This is a naive post, Magnus. It’s quite easy to familiarise yourself with the academic concepts around SYSTEMIC white privilege. Please do so and then reconsider this hurtful and unhelpful narrative.”
