AKA South African Hip Hop maestro, at the weekend, won BIG at the Namibian Annual Music Awards (NAMA). His win came in the form of public voting, which saw him receive over 60% of the votes for Pan-African Artist of the Year for his chart-topping hit, Fela In Versace ft Kiddomant.
AKA, real name Kiernan Forbes says he’s very excited about this win as it comes at a time when we are bruised as Africans and where more than ever, as a musician with some influence, he needs to be more measured with his messages of unity and one Africa.
“I have always been an advocate for Pan Africanism, thus most of my collaborations are with artists across the entire African continent. We are the same. We are from the same continent. Our fight and struggles are the same,” says AKA.
AKA is currently traveling to New York City, in partnership with Cruz and will attend some of the shows at New York Fashion Week – coupled with him taking in some musical inspirations as he is in the of putting the final touches to his upcoming 6th studio album. This trip happens as AKA gears up for his upcoming BIG collaboration reveal with Reebok – with much-anticipated details to follow.
Last week, on Wednesday, AKA clarified the public misrepresentation of his football tweet, as a xenophobic attack. The rapper was also saddened by the notion that he dislikes or hates Nigeria/Nigerians and he does not.
“At NO point do I say anything negative about Nigeria. If anything I’m saying the opposite – Nigeria is good at so many things, they’re winning! My frustration was in South Africa losing the football match,” says AKA.
The rapper has received numerous threats from people assumed to be from Nigeria saying they will “kill” him if he goes to that country.
