SABC1’s Uzalo actor Qhabanga, real name Siyabonga Shibe is over the moon and nervous at the same time. This follows a video he shared on his Instagram taking his son, 6-year-old Yena to school for his first interview for Grade 1 in 2020.
Speaking to MGOSI.co.za, an excited Siyabonga says that he’s nervous and proud at the same time because this shows that he’s also growing as a person.
“It’s a big achievement to take my son to school. I want to instill education values in him and he must know and respect that education is King,” he says.
The actor is best known for his role in the SABC1 drama series Gaz’lam and Bay of Plenty, says that he is raising his son according to his Zulu traditional-values and he wants him to also learn the other official languages spoken in South Africa.
“For now he knows isiZulu, Sesotho and English. I want him to learn the other languages so that he can grow up as a much better communicator,” Siyabonga says.
“All these videos I am capturing with him I’ll keep them somewhere as memories so that when he grows like any other child starts to be rebelious (shares a laugh) I can be able to show him and say this is where I am from with him. As much as I don’t have much but I am doing my best to make sure he gets the things I didn’t have,” he adds.
MGOSI.co.za asked about the choice of name Yena and he says he gave him that name because to his parents he is the chosen one. Yena will be celebrating his birthday on September 27th.
Uzalo is one of South Africa’s most-watched television shows with more than 9million viewers.
