Thandiswa Mazwai acknowledged that she has always loved Mayibuye (iAfrika) by Hugh Masekela, saying that Bra Hugh’s music is always heartfelt.
“I have always loved this song by the now late great Hugh Masekela. Hugh’s music is always heartfelt. From the call on “Mayibuye iAfrika” to the tenderness when he sings “if I had to live without you, I wouldn’t want to live no more”. Hugh could pull at my heartstrings, rock the party, talk that shit, and give so much love,” expresses Thandiswa Mazwai.

Thandiswa Mazwai says that Mayibuye is a special song because it speaks to Bra Hugh’s earnest surrender to our collective call to be of service to one another.
The Hugh Masekela Foundation has released The Masekela All-Stars – Thuma Mina (Send Me, featuring the likes of Thandiswa Mazwai, Vusi Mahlasela, Zolani Mahola, Abigail Kubheka, and J’Something to name just a few.

The Hugh Masekela Foundation also announced that J’Something will go on to collaborate with Bra Hugh Masekela on Heaven In You, a song featured on his final 2016 studio recording No Borders.

The late Bra Hugh Masekela was a trumpeter, flugelhornist, cornetist, singer, and composer who has been described as the father of South African jazz.

Bra Hugh was internationally known for his jazz compositions and for writing well-known anti-apartheid songs such as Soweto Blues and Bring Him Back Home.
This year marks 3-years since the passing of Bra Hugh.
